The Reason this Democratic Party Has Concealed their Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: The Inside Story.

The action from the DNC to block the public viewing regarding its own autopsy report on the 2024 election seems shocking but not surprising. Opposed to frank assessments, the DNC operates more like a communications shop rather than an electoral entity devoted to cultivating a volunteer base for winning elections.

A Culture of Conformity

Unwilling to break with the party establishment's culture of conformity, the committee has stayed within the Biden-Harris shadow all through this past year. Publishing such a report could have demonstrated whether party leaders truly desire to encourage honest conversation about the strategic failures that paved the way for Donald Trump to return to the White House. Yet, the DNC is proceeding as if there is little to understand following the stunning loss from the last cycle.

"Here’s our North Star: will this lead to victory? If not, it’s a distraction from what truly matters," a justification which was presented for withholding the analysis.

Major Failures an Analysis Could Have Addressed

An autopsy report worth its salt would confront key points of failure. These include:

  • Voter Alienation: Failing to retain of millions of voters that backed the party's candidate in 2020 proved pivotal in the narrowly decided 2024 election.
  • The Insistence to Run: The determined decision of a party leader to run again, and an extremely delayed withdrawal, has been criticized as denying Democratic voters the chance for a competitive nomination process.
  • Losing Touch With the Working-Class Base: While facing economic anxiety, the campaign is criticized for accommodating powerful financial backers without successfully attempting to challenge the role of big business.
  • A Gaza Factor: The refusal to shift a stance regarding the situation in Gaza is cited as alienating many voters, notably among young people, Arab-Americans, and Muslim Americans.
  • Eroding Young Voter Allegiance: Extensive evidence indicates a huge decline in votes for the candidate among young voters.

A History Avoiding Accountability

Choosing secrecy is consistent with a pattern to avoid uncomfortable facts. It recalls a dynamic where nearly all Democratic officeholder in Congress went along with an incumbent's decision for seeking another term right up until a disastrous campaign event compelled a change.

At the same time, large majorities of Democratic voters had been continually telling researchers that they opposed the incumbent to seek re-election.

Financial Issues

A thorough autopsy might also probe questions about where money went, such as the amounts went to party strategists and ad buyers over the course of a campaign that managed to spend an enormous sum in a short period.

The Underlying Problem

Ultimately, the blockage surrounding this report is symptomatic of a submission toward the existing power structure responsible for an unsuccessful presidential campaign. The signal for the party's base – which includes countless loyal volunteers – appears to be that they cannot have a right to see what party chiefs say they discovered from hundreds of interviews drawing from conversations with insiders.

A party unable to publicly examine its mistakes finds it difficult to escape the pattern that ended up being so advantageous to the winning candidate.
