Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
